Real Wedding: A Love and Laughter Filled Day at a Scottish Castle
Maureen decided to design her own wedding dress, resulting in a beautifully unique dress in exactly the style she was after, while Pieter was dapper in a dark blue groom's suit.
The unreliable Scottish weather pulled it out of the bag for the couple, with the sun making an appearance, allowing everyone to make the most of the impressive castle grounds.

Mo and Pieter met in a bar in London on Valentine's Day 2014, and a few years later, Pieter got down on one knee in the Lake District.

"The proposal was a complete surprise," says Pieter. "I did it by the side of Lake Windermere as the sun was setting. Little did we know, James Matthews would propose to Pippa Middleton in the same place a few months later!"

Mo and Pieter held their wedding ceremony at the striking St. Aloysius Church in Glasgow. The breath-taking surroundings provided a beautiful backdrop for their June wedding.

If you're having a church wedding, check out our edit of beautiful church wedding dresses, ideal for religious ceremonies.
The wedding venue
Mo and Pieter followed their ceremony with a reception at Culcreuch Castle in Fintry, Scotland.

"We wanted something quintessentially Scottish and Castle Culcreuch took our breath away," explains Pieter. "It has everything; the grounds, the loch, the rolling hills, the incredible castle, the roaring log fire and plenty for room for all who wanted to stay there."

READ MORE: 32 fabulous wedding venues in Scotland
The wedding colours
Pieter's surname is Graham, and the family has its own tartan, in white, navy and dark green, so the wedding colour scheme was based on the palette.

"We had very natural styling to suit the aesthetic of the castle," says Pieter. "With this in mind we chose wild flowers and eucalyptus for the tables, mixed in with candles."

The couple asked the castle to remove any overhead lighting to make the venue more atmospheric. They placed lanterns outside the venue and draped white lighting at the back of the dance floor, and festoon lighting in the courtyard to bring the venue to life.

READ MORE: Wedding lighting inspiration for a shining big day
The bridal bouquet
The flowers for Pieter and Mo's wedding day were created by Quidest of Hyndland, opting to use wild flowers for an unkempt look that perfectly suited their venue.
The button hole
Pieter's buttonhole matched the floral decorations beautifully, equally wild and rustic in style.

READ MORE: 17 cool buttonhole idea for the groom
The handmade wedding dress
After searching fruitlessly for a few months for a wedding dress, Mo decided to take things into her own hands and design her wedding dress herself, creating a gown that was very personal to her, and unique in style.

A local seamstress brought her dreams to life, creating the dress.

"She wanted the dress to be in pieces, mixing the classic wedding silk skirt with a modern silhouette on top," explains Pieter.

Blue wedding shoes
Mo paired her beautifully simple gown with a pair of cobalt blue wedding shoes.
The bridesmaids' dresses
The bridesmaids' Reiss dresses were chosen to mimic the wild flowers in the bouquet, and looked perfect with the backdrop of the venue.
The groom's suit
The groom and groomsmen all wore suits courtesy of Hawes and Curtis.

If you're looking for a navy outfit for your groom, check out our edit of the best blue groom's suits for style inspiration.
The semi-naked wedding cake
Mo and Pieter chose to have a nearly-naked wedding cake, also to reflect the Scottish countryside.

The cake was created by Three Sister's Bake, and was both traditional Victoria sponge and salted caramel, topped with fresh fruit.
The most memorable part of the day
"Our memories of the day are very much linked to our memories of the entire build-up to the wedding," says Pieter.

"While taking part in a military fitness class in January Maureen broke her ankle in two places, requiring surgery with screws and a metal plate put into her ankle. She was on crutches and in plaster for six weeks before moving to crutches and a boot, Maureen only began moving without crutches in May, one month before the wedding."

"Needless to say it took intensive physio for Mo to be able to walk down the aisle and some good flat shoes in order to complete the first dance! Our whole build up to the day was really dominated by this so the relief and happiness felt that it didn’t end up affecting the day was amazing."
Wedding advice for other couples
"Don’t get bullied by suppliers into dressing your venue the way they want," advises Pieter.

"Stick to your guns and your own vision, we had to find someone different to help us dress the venue only a month before the wedding as the previous person had agreed with our thoughts then totally ignored us when we saw the final idea."

"We would also say relax and enjoy the day and find some time to just spend with each other. We grabbed a glass of champagne together for 20 minutes on the day out of the way of everyone else and it was such a lovely way to listen to each other and talk about how great the day had been whilst we were still living it."
