This historic coaching inn occupies a prime spot in the quaint market town of Midhurst, in the heart of the South Downs. Around an hour’s drive from London, it’s the perfect retreat from city life, and there are walking routes, stunning views and gorgeous period buildings right on the doorstep.
The Spread Eagle dates from 1430 and is brimming with character. Think roaring fires, low lighting, quirky, uneven ceilings, and plenty of interesting nooks and crannies. We relaxed in the Scandi-style pool house and spa – the ‘South Downs Soother’ massage is utterly incredible. Later, we enjoyed a delightful candlelit dinner, and it would have been rude not to try a tipple from the hotel’s extensive gin menu. For a truly memorable stay, book the Queen’s Suite, a huge room full of unique period features including a 15th-century wig closet, and the biggest four-poster bed we’ve ever seen!
Prices at the Spread Eagle start from £119 per night.
