First impressions: Something about the grand exterior of The Magdalen Chapter leads us to expect chintzy country house interiors. So we're pleasantly surprised to discover the style is in fact cool, sleek and contemporary throughout. It's getting dark when we arrive, but we can just about glimpse the generous walled garden outside.
Room for romance: Ushered to our room by a friendly staff member - they're all rather lovely here - we're instantly impressed by the inviting interiors. The bed is blissfully comfy, and we're pleased to discover the Nespresso machine. And - joy! - a delicious bathroom filled with REN treats. The bathroom is pretty much my favourite part of any hotel room (#bathobsessive), so I'm in heaven.
Lounging around: Pre-dinner, we go for a snoop around the hotel. There's a comfortable lounge and a cool bar - the cocktail menu catches our attention, so we have to pause our snooping for an aperitif or three.
We love: The theatrical restaurant, where we enjoy succulent steak with some truly yummy sides. Luckily, we just about save room for pudding.
The next day, the REN spa is another high point. There's an inside/out pool and a fitness room, and the massages we have really hit the spot.
