Karen Betts has a reputation for being the best in the biz when it comes to permanent make-up and I knew I was in safe hands as soon as she greeted me with a big, beaming smile at her swanky Harley Street clinic.
Karen sat me down to ask what I liked and disliked about my brows currently and what I wanted from the procedure, and she then took off my current eyebrow make-up and drew out my new proposed brows. They were the perfect shape and size for my face, so I didn’t have to hesitate before I gave Karen the go ahead to get to work. However, you can discuss any tweaks at this stage – before the treatment actually begins.
I can’t deny that the feeling of the microblading being carried out is rather scratchy, so it doesn’t feel particularly pleasant. But, as a true professional, Karen kept asking if I needed more numbing cream and luckily, she worked very quickly to apply each hair stroke, and soon the treatment was over.
Looking in the mirror straight away can be quite overwhelming if you’re not used to a heavily-made-up brow, but the colour will settle down after a few days and give more of a natural look.
In 4–12 weeks, you’ll need a follow-up appointment just to check if there are any areas that need re-touching and Karen will refill these for you.
The only problem with this treatment is, once you have microbladed brows, you won’t ever be able to live without them!
Does it hurt?
It will be a little uncomfortable in places. The numbing cream they put on really does help, but there’s certain areas that are more tender than others.
Will my eyebrows need to be shaved?
No – Karen may pluck a few straggly hairs to create the perfect shape but microblading results are much better when there is some natural hair there too.
How long does it take?
You’ll need an initial appointment of around an hour and a follow-up session 4–12 weeks later which will only be around 30 minutes.
What are the side effects?
The area around your brows will be a little swollen and perhaps red after you leave the clinic – but nothing major. You’ll also notice the colour is a bit darker for the first week or so, but this will settle.
How do I care for my brows?
The hardest part is not getting them wet for seven days. Fashioning pieces of plastic to my face just to have a shower wasn’t the best experience, but it’s totally worth it.
How long does it last?
Typically, the results last for 12–18 months before very gradually fading – it does depend on the individual though.
What if I don’t like the result?
Karen will make sure that you are completely happy with the proposed brow shape before the tattooing starts – but trust us, you are in very safe hands. You’ll love your new brows!
Is it safe?
There are some small risks that come with any invasive pigment treatment, however you’ll be run through all of these beforehand and you are also required to have a patch test prior to your appointment.
